Dot to Trot

My world is expanding as my butt is shrinking!

Want To Lose Weight? Eat Butter!

Turns out butter is healthy after all. A new review of studies on the dangers of saturated fat show that the evidence is seriously flawed and the guidelines against fat should never have been issued. Image courtesy of SOMMAI and

Yesterday the news spread far and wide that the low-fat diet pushed on us by nutritionists, the weight loss industry and the US government, lacked any evidence that it was healthy.

Yep, they told us to cut saturated fat out of our diets. As a result, Americans reduced their fat intake, which lead to a dramatic increase in their calorie consumption due to low-fat foods being loaded with carbs and sugars.

Yet there was no scientific evidence that a low-fat diet was actually healthy. Basically, we were guinea pigs in a 40+year experiment conduced by our government. The result? We got fatter and sicker.

Turns out a scientific review of “evidence” that saturated fat caused heart disease was seriously flawed. Well, not just flawed, but included a lot of junk science.

The folks reviewing these studies made a damning statement about the low-fat diet: The guidelines to avoid fat should never have been introduced.

Obesity, diabetes, metabolic disorders, and a host of other weight related illnesses have increased dramatically since our government adopted its low-fat policy. Coincidence? I think not.

I’m finishing up two great books that actually look at the evidence surrounding the diet-heart hypothesis (a.k.a. low-fat diet) and the zealots that pushed it on us. I’ll have a review of both books soon, but for now, let’s just say that I’ve spent many a night reading these great books while fighting the urge to bang my head against the wall.

I’m sure I startled my husband and dogs with my occasional outbursts of “Are you f*cking serious?”

The sheer arrogance of these zealots is unbelievable.

Is Cholesterol The Next Domino To Fall?
While saturated fat got a lot of attention yesterday, the Washington Post reported that the federal government was getting ready to drop its 40-year caution about eating high-cholesterol foods (like eggs).

Why? Flawed science. What a shocker!

But the news wasn’t all good. You see the same government committee recommending ending the warning plan to blame high cholesterol on…wait for it…foods high in saturated fats (red meat, whole milk and butter). How did they come up with this? By using the same flawed/bad data that claimed a low-fat diet is good for us.

Are you f*ucking serious?
