Virtual Walk — Slow Slog To Louisville, KY

Despite injuries, I racked up enough cardio miles in May to virtually walk to Louisville, KY.

Despite injuries, I racked up enough cardio miles in May to virtually walk to Louisville, KY.

Due to injuries, my virtual walk to Denver slowed a bit. I walked and ran less than 3 miles for the month thanks to a very painful Achilles tendon. With the help of my spin class, May wasn’t a total disaster as I logged nearly 140 miles on a stationary bike.

I’m ahead of my 72-mile monthly average, but I’m still disappointed and frustrated. It seems like every month I re-injure something below my waist. So for June I decided I needed to add another cardio routine into the mix that takes some pressure off my legs. Now is the time to open up my wallet to finally buy that blasted swimsuit. Hopefully I can fit in 1-2 hours of swimming a week into my schedule.

May Workout Mileage Breakdown

Activity Miles Days
5K Training 1.36 1
Spin Class 136.10 12
Swimming 0 0
Walking .85 1
Weightlifting 0 8
Yoga 0 4
Total 138.32 26

Since I started this little virtual adventure, I’ve racked up 584 cardio miles so far. That’s a little more than a third of the way there! I have another 6 months to get to Denver and possibly beyond. Getting healthy and staying injury free is key.

Where Am I?
I ended up in Louisville, KY – home of the famous Louisville Slugger, the Kentucky Derby and, perhaps most importantly, where 1/3 of all bourbon is produced!

If you want adventure then check out the Louisville Mega Cavern. A huge limestone quarry created the cavern back in the day. The cavern offers two extreme sports that I’m itching to try – aerial ropes and zip lines.

Mega Quest – the only fully underground aerial ropes challenge course in the world – offers a great workout. Aerial ropes are the hottest extreme sport to come out of Europe. The Mega Quest includes 76 challenges. Check out the video below. Looks like a fun and intense workout.

Or if zip lines are more your thing, try the Mega Zips – the only underground zip line course in the world. The cavern includes 6 underground zip lines that include a dual racing zip and two challenge bridges to test your skill, balance and toughness.

Sweet!

As you know, I love exploring hiking trails at various parks. Well Kentucky offers a very unique trail that you don’t want to pass up – The Kentucky Bourbon Trail. Bourbon is unique to America and Kentucky is our nation’s epicenter. This trail takes you to 8 of the state’s distilleries like Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam, and Woodford Reserve (my hubby’s current favorite). You get an inside peek into the bourbon making process, check out the facilities and an after-tour bourbon tasting. Whisky and bourbon lovers from all over the world hit this trail every year.

There’s also the Urban Bourbon Trail in the heart of Louisville. This trail takes you to the world’s best bourbon bars, all of which serve anywhere from 50-150 kinds of bourbon as well as foods made with bourbon.

Where Am I Headed?
Depending on injuries and if I can get some serious swim time, I’ve got St. Louis, Missouri in my sites. But I need to hit 250 cardio miles in June to make that happen. I want to push myself, but the last thing I want to do is risk further injury.
