Dot to Trot

My world is expanding as my butt is shrinking!

Sugar By Any Other Name…

Want to avoid sugar?  That’s hard to do if you are buying any packaged food these days. Just reading the label isn’t enough. Sugar has so many names. Thankfully Prevention Magazine lists 57 names of sugar you’ll find on food labels. My guess is this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Check out this Fiber One label.

I discovered 9 sugars (yes, 9!) in the ingredients for Fiber One’s Oats & Chocolate bar. Of course, I couldn’t tell you what tocopherols is without looking it up. And who doesn’t bust out their dictionary when they hit the grocery store?

One bar has 29g of carbs — 9g more than I eat in a day — and 10g of sugar. This is marketed as a healthy snack? Really?!?  Feed Me I’m Cranky does a great take down of Fiber One.

Oh, and I love how it’s called “Oats & Chocolate” as if by putting “Oats” first naturally means it’s healthy. Ugh! It’s a glorified candy bar. That’s it. And the last time I checked, there is no such thing as a healthy candy bar. This is truly a candidate for a marketing hall of shame.

Want an on the go healthy snack? Try slices of cucumber, red bell pepper, or a small apple.

End of rant.

  1. I used to eat that flavor of Fiber One bar on a daily basis until I finally figured out that it was the thing causing my stomach issues. Maybe it has something to do with all those crazy ingredients?
